Fall Movie Reviews: A High-Altitude Thriller That Keeps You on Edge
Few thrillers make a simple fear feel as intense as Fall. Directed by Scott Mann, the 2022 survival film follows best friends Becky and Hunter, who climb a remote, 2,000-foot television tower. When they become stranded near the top, their plans for a daring adventure turn into a desperate fight to get back down.
What Is Fall About?
Becky, played by Grace Caroline Currey, is still grieving a personal loss when her thrill-seeking friend Hunter, played by Virginia Gardner, encourages her to take on a dangerous challenge. The two climb an abandoned tower in the desert, hoping to help Becky face her fears. But when the ladder gives way, they are left stuck on a tiny platform high above the ground, with little food, limited supplies, and no easy way to call for help.
The setup is deliberately spare. Much of the movie takes place on the tower, putting the focus on the characters’ decisions and the immediate hazards around them. The height is the film’s main source of suspense—and for viewers who are uneasy with heights, the long views down may be almost as frightening as the story itself.
What Reviewers Liked
Reviews often highlight Fall’s gripping premise and its ability to create tension from a single, exposed location. The tower makes for an instantly understandable threat: the characters are trapped, the ground is far below, and every attempt to move around brings another risk. The film’s wide shots and aerial views help make that danger feel tangible.
Currey and Gardner also give the story an emotional center. Their characters’ friendship and personal struggles add context to the climb, while the actresses carry much of the film through long stretches of peril. For many viewers, the performances and the escalating survival challenges are the main reasons to keep watching.
Common Criticisms
Reception has been mixed, in part because the film’s high-concept premise is stronger than some of its dialogue and character development. Some reviews find the plot predictable or question the characters’ choices, especially as the danger grows. The story also leans on familiar survival-thriller conventions, so viewers looking for a highly realistic or subtle drama may find it less convincing.
That split is central to the movie’s appeal: Fall is less interested in complicated plotting than in keeping its audience anxious. Its implausibilities may stand out more when the suspense does not work for a viewer.
Is Fall Worth Watching?
If you enjoy tense survival stories, isolated settings, and movies that make you feel every foot of a dangerous drop, Fall is an effective choice. It works best as a nerve-racking thrill ride rather than a realistic account of climbing or a deeply layered character drama. Viewers who dislike heights—or who prefer tightly plausible plots—may want to proceed with caution.
Bottom line: Fall has a simple, powerful hook and plenty of suspense, even if its story and character writing do not impress everyone. It is a solid pick for a high-stakes movie night, especially for anyone who enjoys a thriller that keeps its characters—and its audience—on the edge.
